Zombies unleash on Sydney's CBD for mystery film production

New local and Hollywood projects are popping up on a regular basis in Sydney. 

And on Sunday, a new production potentially caused panic for surprised locals.

A large group of realistic-looking zombies flooded the streets outside of the State Library at Macquarie Street.

While some of the TV show or film’s extras sat or stood motionless, others actively protested with signs and megaphones.

One zombie sign read: ‘We’re dead of our feelings!’ 

The zombies were dressed in a myriad of costumes, appear to be a punk rocker, a bride, a business man and a baker, to name a few.

While many Hollywood A-listers have relocated Down Under to film big productions locally, it’s unclear what this mystery project is.

There were no big name stars seen on set, but the scenes may have been taken for establishing shots without the need for lead actors in frame.

Interestingly, there was a fallen sign that real ‘Marvel Stadium’ in view, which is an Australian sports and entertainment stadium in Melbourne.

After watching some of the filming, a source speculated to Daily Mail Australia that it could be another Marvel blockbuster.

Marvel Zombies was a five-issue limited series published from December 2005 to April 2006 by Marvel Comics.

While there was fan speculation in 2020 of this comic series being transformed into films, Marvel have never officially confirmed the news.

If true, the film would be set in an alternate universe where the world’s superhero population has been infected with a virus which turned them all into zombies.

The comics begin with an unknown superhero crash landing on an alternate Earth (Earth-2149) from another dimension, brought by the ‘Hunger’, before infecting the Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four and almost all other superheroes in the Marvel Multiverse.

It could also be a dream sequence filmed for the new Thor movie, Love and Thunder. 

 The latest instalment in the Thor franchise is currently filming in Australia after being a recipient of the Federal Government’s $24.1 million Location Incentive grant.

The film, directed by New Zealand’s Taika Waititi, is expected to invest over $178million in the local economy, will create around 2,500 jobs and enlist services from around 1,650 businesses. Marvel has also set up a trainee program for Australian actors and crew as part of the deal. 

Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman and Matt Damon are all in Australia filming the flick. 

Production is taking place at Sydney’s Fox Studio as well as Centennial Park.
