THIS is the frightening moment a driver veered onto the wrong side of the road, smashed into another car and spun upside down – before escaping prosecution.

Driving instructor Colin Savage has branded the decision not to pursue charges “disgraceful” after the horrifying crash in Canterbury, Kent.

The 48-year-old was behind the wheel of his Ford Puma with his wife in the passenger seat when the black Nissan Qashqai rounded the bend and crossed the dividing line.

Mr Savage swerved into a bush, but was unable to move far enough over to escape the oncoming vehicle.

He suffered severe whiplash and a shoulder injury in the collision, while his wife is a “nervous wreck” and frightened to get back in a car.

However, the other driver was not prosecuted following the incident. Instead, cops ordered him to attend a driver awareness course.

Mr Savage told Kent Online: “I think it’s disgraceful.

“The police said, ‘Oh, he’s not got away with it’ – but he has.

“They are not prosecuting him, he has nothing on his licence and he’s not affected in any way, shape or form.

“I have potentially got to have surgery on my shoulder and my wife is seeing a psychiatrist because she bursts into tears every time we drive down a country lane and a car comes the other way.”

He said he had “just one second to react” from the moment the driver crossed the central reservation.

“I would estimate he was a metre into my lane,” he said.

“I swerved into the hedge to avoid hitting him in a head-on collision.”

The Nissan smashed into the side of the Ford before flipping sideways and hitting a tree.

“I absolutely dread to think if it had been one of my learners driving and he had come round the corner,” Mr Savage said.

HORROR SMASH

“I look at the video and I don’t know how I missed it.”

His wife was rushed to hospital by paramedics after the crash. She suffered muscle damage, which has made her arthritis “1,000 times worse”, Mr Savage said.

“She was black and blue all over from the seatbelt and airbag – we both have airbag burns – and she is being referred to a psychiatrist,” he said.

“She tries to avoid driving now. She used to be a very confident driver and passenger.

“We would drive everywhere and she would do map-reading, but now she is a nervous wreck.

“Every time we go on the road and there is a car coming the other way, she flinches.”

Cops confirmed they were called to a crash at 2.25pm on May 9.

“A woman was taken to a local hospital as a precaution and officers worked to clear the road and assist the recovery of the vehicles,” a spokesperson said.

“A breathalyser brought to the scene was found not to be working, so neither driver was breathalysed, although there was no suspicion of drink driving against either of the parties involved.

“Following a review of the circumstances by Kent Police’s Traffic Summons Case Review Team, one of the drivers involved has been offered to undertake a safe and considerate driver awareness course.

“Should the driver decline to take the course, the issuing of a court summons or fine will be further considered.”
