It was an iconic British TV show for children who grew up in the Noughties.

So Tracy Beaker fans took to social media in their droves on Tuesday as they reacted to the first glimpse of the revived series that will air on CBBC this week.

In new show, My Mum Tracy Beaker, Dani Harmer, 32 – who played the former tearaway teen in the original 2002 series – will reprise the character who is now in her thirties.

In the upcoming reboot, the beloved character from the Jacqueline Wilson novel is now a single mother raising her nine-year-old daughter, Jess Beaker.

The actress tweeted a teaser clip on her Twitter page on Tuesday, writing: ‘My Mum Tracy Beaker!!! This Friday at 5pm xxx’ 

The 30-second video shows Tracy Beaker reuniting with her nemesis Justine Littlewood, played by Montanna Thompson – the same actress as in the original series.

Fans went wild online, sending ‘Tracy Beaker’ soaring to trend at number five on Twitter as they geared up to watch the new series on Friday.

However, as the show last aired in 2005, some joked that the BBC had made an error of judgement streaming the new series on the children’s channel, CBBC, as the fan-base are now all adults.

One Twitter user wrote: ‘CBBC are probably expecting 7-9 year olds to tune into the new Tracy Beaker show when in reality, it’s gonna be people in their twenties who grew up telling people to bog off’.

Others tweeted memes, poking fun at the fact that people now aged between 20 and 30 are the most excited to watch the reboot.

Some fans were eager to experience a ‘nostalgic hit’ as they prepared to relive their childhood.

And others saw the humour in the fact that they that they would be coming home from work to watch a children’s TV show. 

One grown-up fan remembered how she was ‘banned’ from watching Tracy Beaker as a child because her mother believed it was making her develop an ‘attitude’, as she began using Tracy’s famous insult: ‘Bog off’.

The teaser clip showing Tracy reuniting with Justine Littlewood as adults, got fans talking on Twitter as they were thrilled to see the ‘iconic feud’ revived. 

One person wrote: ‘I don’t think people fully understand how iconic it is that Tracy Beaker and Justine Littlewood are reuniting as adults. 

‘CBBC don’t realise how massive this is, they’ve aimed it at kids but I bet their highest viewing percentage will be age 20s-30s.’

Dani, who began playing the iconic role in 2002 when she was just 12 years old, later responded to the overwhelming reaction the teaser received, writing: ‘Well that clip went down rather well!!! 

‘So glad we got to make this programme!! It’s for all ages! So you can enjoy it at 7 or 37!!!!’

She also took the opportunity to write back to people commenting on her weight, saying: ‘Overwhelmed by all the love!! Sad that I’ve had to use my block button a couple of times though!! But I’m far too old for negativity!! 

‘And yes I’ve put on weight! We’ve been in lockdown all year! I ate some chocolate! Get over it… Size 10 isn’t exactly huge now move on.’

The official BBC teaser for the first episode of the new series, reads: ‘Jess Beaker loves her life with her mum Tracy, until famous footballer Sean Godfrey enters the picture!’ 

In the reboot based on Jacqueline Wilson’s 2018 book, Tracy is a single mother to nine-year-old daughter Jess, played by Emma Maggie Davies, as the duo try to ‘scrape by financially’.

Yet their lives are transformed by Tracy’s new rich footballer boyfriend, Sean Godfrey, played by Jordan Duvigneau.

Sean, who is recently retired and has always admired Tracy since they were young, wants to whisk the mother and daughter away to his lavish mansion.

But with things starting to go ‘pear-shaped’, it’s up to Tracy’s nine-year-old daughter Jess to save the day.

My Mum Tracy Beaker will also see original show regulars Lisa Coleman, who plays Tracy’s foster mum Cam, and Ruth Gemmell, who plays Tracy’s estranged mother Carly Beaker.

The reboot will be shown from the perspective of Jess and coincides with the 30th anniversary of Jacqueline Wilson’s original 1991 book The Story Of Tracy Beaker. 

My Mum Tracy Beaker will air as a three-part series on CBBC, starting on Friday, February 15, and continuing over the weekend at 5pm each day. 

Each episode will be available to watch on BBC iPlayer after it has aired.
