Tokyo Olympics athlete COLLAPSES – Russian archer stretchered off in searing heat

Russian Olympian Svetlana Gomboeva needed medical attention after collapsing in 33C heat during her qualifying round in the archery event at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The 23-year-old was competing in a qualifying round on Friday as temperatures soared.

Athletes, coaches and Olympic staff were all spotted trying to find shade and shelter from the sun under trees.

Gomboeva had just completed her final round and went to check on her scores before fainting and was taken out of the arena on a stretcher.

Medics soon rushed to her aid as the Russian archer soon regained consciousness.

She was then seen walking away with an ice bag held to her head with two people helping her keep her balance.

Her coach, Stanislav Popov, insisted the tough humidity on Friday played a part in Gomboeva’s collapse.

“It turns out that she couldn’t stand a whole day out in the heat,” Gomboeva’s coach said.

“This is the first time I remember this happening. In Vladivostok, where we were training before this, the weather was similar. But humidity played a role here.”

The Russian Olympic committee sent out a message on Twitter after Gomboeva’s incident.

“We wish health and speedy recovery to Svetlana Gomboeva,” it read.
