The fictional series, which stars Simon Pegg, is a fast-paced cyber crime thriller set in 2024. It follows a team of analysts at GCHQ who are secretly working to stop a series of invisible cyber-attacks against the UK in the run up to the country’s first post-pandemic general election.

Simon, 52, leads the series, playing Daniel Patrick, the Head of Operations at GCHQ.

He is joined on screen by several other familiar faces, including Adrian Lester, Mark Rylance and Maisie Richardson-Sellers, as well as newcomer Hannah Khalique-Brown. Meanwhile, Peter Kosminsky helms the series from behind the camera.

The six-episode series started out strong, with viewers praising it for being “amazing,” “brilliant,” and “scarily good.”

However, it failed to deliver in the finale, according to fans.

The sixth episode left the show in a cliffhanger and didn’t provide viewers with the answers they’ve been clamouring for all season.

Is The Undeclared War based on a true story?

One viewer took to Twitter in despair and said, “[I] just finished watching ‘the undeclared war’ on channel 4, absolutely amazing but I want to punch a wall from the ending.”

Another viewer was less than impressed with the finale, too. “Finished off The Undeclared War last night. After a decent start it really tailed off, and the ending was just too pat. Not terrible, just not that good,” they said.

“Went to binge the undeclared war series, but I think they forgot the end for the show,” a third viewer quipped.

Another viewer said it seemed like the writers had simply forgotten about the finale. “The big surprise of The Undeclared War was the ending – it surprised the scriptwriters that they’d run out of episodes.”

“What sort of ending was that? Made no sense,” said another. Along with the ending, this viewer criticised the lack of character depth and the length of the episodes, but said a second season could give the series a chance to redeem itself.

Another fan issues a similar statement, saying, “The #undeclaredwar on @Channel4 was incredible up until the ending of the last episode. Come on @simonpegg – I hope there’s another season.”

All fans want now is to have their questions answered in a second season of The Undeclared War, but perhaps that was what the writers were hoping for all along.

All six episodes of The Undeclared War are available to stream on All 4 now.
