A male shopper allegedly stabbed another man and assaulted a security guard after a woman in his company was told to wear a face mask in a shopping centre.

The 25-year-old man, a woman and two children were in Windsor Riverview shopping centre on George Street in Windsor in Sydney’s north-west when the woman was asked by a security guard to put a mask on at 8:20pm on Tuesday.

A short time later, the man allegedly approached the security guard, who is a 59-year-old man, and allegedly pushed him before punching him multiple times.

Another customer, a 53-year-old man, then intervened and a fight allegedly broke out.

The 25-year-old allegedly produced a knife and stabbed the 53-year-old man in the leg during the confrontation.

Eventually, the customer and security guard managed to restrain the man before officers from Hawkesbury Police Area Command arrived.

Officers arrested the man after a short struggle and took him to Windsor Police Station, where he was charged with armed with intent to commit indictable offence, affray, and resist or hinder police officer in the execution of duty.

He was refused bail and is due to appear in Penrith Local Court on Wednesday.

Face masks are currently mandatory in shopping centres, supermarkets and retail shops in Greater Sydney, which includes Wollongong, Central Coast and Blue Mountains.

The security guard was within his right to request the woman wear a mask.

It is not suggested the woman refused to wear a mask.

Masks are also mandatory on public transport, in cinemas and theatres, places of worship, hair and beauty premises and aged care facilities.

More to come.
