  • It has not been lived in for 30 years and has not hit the market for eight decades
  • Agents say it’s ‘completely unliveable’ and in ‘desperate need of renovation’

A ‘completely unliveable’ house that has been abandoned for 30 years could sell for $1.6million as it hits the property market for the first time in eight decades.

The three-bedroom terrace house is full of rotting wood, rusting metal and peeling paint on 31 George Street in the inner-city suburb Redfern in Sydney.

Pictures show the home is an eye-sore from the street with rusty metal gates and rust stains across the frontage.

Inside, the staircase railing is made of rotting wood while paint and cladding have peeled to give way to exposed concrete underneath.

The cluttered kitchen is full of peeling paint, old appliances and general litter that has gathered dust over the years.

Bedrooms tell a similar story with more peeling paint, old furniture and general mess – although Victorian features remain, like a fireplace that has been boarded up.

‘This extremely dilapidated Victorian terrace represents a truly breathtaking opportunity for those with creative vision,’ the property description reads.

‘The property sits on a deep block and is completely unliveable as is yet promises extraordinary prospects for a major transformation.’

Belle Property agent Ted Pye said the owner is an elderly man who is in aged care.

‘His (the elderly man’s) family is selling the property. He hasn’t actually lived there since 1989 when his wife died, so just over 30 years,’ Mr Pye told Daily Mail Australia.

‘It’s been with one family for the last 80 years, they paid £13,000 pounds for it at the time, which is the equivalent to $190,000.’

Mr Pye said he has had ‘a lot of inquiries’ about the property despite it being ‘in desperate need of renovation’.

‘It’s literally falling to bits in every direction. It’s going to need to be rebuilt from the ground up,’ he said.

He expects an owner builder or family to buy the home but said its ‘very early’ to estimate a price.

‘The land value itself is valued at $1million. At the end of the day, this comes down to what a buyer is willing to pay for it,’ he said.

‘There is no guide price, we’ll let the buyers decide that at auction.’

Domain’s property report estimates the house will sell for $1.58 million at auction while the median price for a three-bedroom house in Redfern is $1.6 million.

The property is due to go to auction on February 20.
