Mike Bushell said Joe Root was inching closer to getting his highest ever test match total during the game, a hit of 254. But as he said that, Root hit a 218. The BBC star was shocked as he admitted to potentially “jinxing” the cricketer.

Speaking on BBC Breakfast, Mr Bushell said: “England have never lost a test match when he’s scored a century so they’re unlikely to do this one.

“Joe Root has already hit the highest score by an English player in India so he’s still going strong.

“India is ranked, remember they’re the second-best test team in the world.

“On home soil, they’re just not used to being punished in a way that England captain Joe Root is making them toil this morning.

“He’s inching his way towards his highest ever test match total as well.

“Don’t want to jinx it but that is 254.”

As a video shows Root knocking the cricket ball out of the stadium, Mr Bushell said: “I don’t believe it, I’ve jinxed it!

“Why did I say this? I’m so annoyed at myself now.”
