Max Verstappen’s father Jos has called for his son to be placed in the same team as Lewis Hamilton so the pair can finally end the debate over who is the better driver. However, the Silver Arrows would be silly to take such a risk with two fiery characters.
Verstappen has occasionally gotten the better of Hamilton after replacing Sebastian Vettel as the Brit’s title challenger.
The gutsy Dutchman is one of the biggest risk takers on the track and his gambles often reap rewards with podium places.
However, Verstappen has struggled to put up a sustained title fight because his Red Bull is inferior to that of Mercedes.
The F1 star’s father, who raced 107 times in motorsport’s premier competition, called for Hamilton and his son to compete in equal cars.
“It’s the same as what I say about Max: he [Lewis] is incredibly strong,” Jos Verstappen told Dutch publication Formule 1.
“Even if you look at how he fares against his team-mate. At Mercedes it really worked out for Hamilton, at McLaren he had a few years in which it didn’t work.
“You don’t become a world champion if you don’t have a champion team and champion car.
“Let me put it this way: I wouldn’t mind if Max would drive next to Hamilton. Then it is clear, isn’t it?
“The best thing would be if they were driving the same car. Then you can really compare who is the best.
“I would only applaud it, I think it would be a very nice season then. I think the whole world is waiting for that.”
It is unlikely Hamilton will join Red Bull because it would decrease his chances of winning a world title.
The only way for Jos’ dream to come true is if Mercedes offered Verstappen a seat.
But that could cause them a host of problems – and it would certainly upset their main man.
Yes, Toto Wolff’s team would walk away with the Constructors’ Championship, probabably blowing away all of their rivals.
However, the last time Hamilton had a competitive team-mate was Nico Rosberg in 2016 and the pair almost came to blows on several occasions.
Rosberg went on to win the Drivers’ Championship and he retired while on top.
Mercedes have previously considered a move for Verstappen but George Russell is now at the top of their wishlist.
And while Hamilton is still driving for the Brackley-based team, it is wise to not provide too much competition from within.
