Lewis Hamilton held talks with Ferrari towards the end of last season to see if they could put a better deal on the table than Mercedes but the Prancing Horse decided against making a move for the seven-time world campion.

Tentative enquries were made by both parties but Ferrari instead opted to put their faith in youngster Charles Leclerc.

Hamilton is expected to remain with Mercedes for the 2021 campaign, despite yet signing a new contract.

The Brit is technically out of work after his deal with the Silver Arrows expired two weeks ago.

Express Sport understands that Mercedes are confident of getting Hamilton’s new contract sorted before pre-season testing gets underway on March 2.

And Binotto has explained why he left Toto Wolff in a one-horse race for the seven-time world champion’s signature.

“I don’t think there will be regret [not signing Hamilton] because at the end when we took some decisions, we took them thinking they were the right decisions and today we have a fantastic driver like Charles where we invested a lot as Ferrari,” explained Binotto.

“I think he’s got a lot of talent. If he’s got the right car, I’m pretty sure he can challenge Lewis Hamilton.

“We’ve made our choices, and I think together with Carlos we are very strong. I don’t think there will be any regret.”
