The Morning Show host was completely fooled when son Gus, 18, rang and pretended he’d been suspended from uni for the rest of the year after sniffer dogs found drugs in his bag.

‘What the f**k Gus? Are you actually kidding me?’ an enraged Gillies, 53, exclaimed during the call.

The call began with Gus telling his TV presenter mother telling her he was calling from his university and asking her to ‘please don’t panic.’

‘Oh, what’s happened?’ asked a clearly worried Gilles.

“I’ve been suspended for the Autumn and Spring sessions this year,’ said Gus, before admitting, ‘they found weed in my bag.’

After a long period of silence, the Seven Network star exploded, ‘What the f**k Gus? Are you actually kidding me?’

‘I am about to throw up into a wastepaper basket. I’m about to start crying,’ said Gillies, before audibly bursting into tears. ‘I’m literally crying… at work.’

”It’s Kyle and Jackie O… Only Lying!’ announced Henderson.

‘Are you freaking kidding me?!’ asked Gillies.

Gus then admitted he was at home the whole time and had only made the call for the $1000 prize money offered by the radio station.

Hearing the call played back, Gillies started crying again in the KIIS FM studio.

She admitted that the long periods of silence in the call were her ‘processing’ what Gus had told her and trying ‘not to lose it’.

She also revealed she’d gone into departed Morning Show host Sam Armytage’s vacant office for privacy during the call.

Her Morning Show co-host Larry Emdur, who was also in the KIIS FM studio for the replay of the call, revealed he’d seen Kylie looking worse for wear immediately following the prank.

‘She looked like she’d just played in the rugby league grand final,’ said the new host of The Chase.

Gillies admitted she’d cried so hard she’d ‘burst a blood vessel’ in her eye.

Earlier in the interview, Gillies has revealed why she and Emdur attended Sam Armytage’s farewell party on March 11, but her colleagues on Sunrise – including hosts David Koch and Natalie Barr – weren’t invited.

She said that Sam hadn’t actually planned a send-off, but decided to do something at the last minute when Gillies asked her what she was doing that afternoon.

The late lunch at Catalina Restaurant in Sydney’s Rose Bay was cobbled together at the eleventh hour, she said, and the on-air Sunrise team didn’t go because they had already spent hours toasting with Sam at Seven’s Martin Place studios.

She explained: ‘I was there… I said to Sam, “What are you doing after work? You can’t go home and do the washing. Let’s go out and have [lunch]. Let’s have a champagne; you can’t go home.”‘

Radio host Jackie ‘O’ Henderson replied: ‘So you were the one responsible for this impromptu little get-together!’

Gillies agreed, then said reports of the Sunrise team being snubbed by Sam weren’t accurate as they’d spent the morning drinking champagne at Brekky Central.

‘While we were on air [on The Morning Show], they all had some champagne in the office with Sam,’ she said.

It comes after Sunrise hosts Kochie and Natalie confirmed last week they hadn’t been invited to former anchor Sam’s farewell party.

The pair were grilled about Sam’s departure on Kyle and Jackie O on Thursday, and Kochie, 65, admitted he and Natalie, 53, hadn’t even been told about the shindig.

‘Why didn’t you two go to Sam’s farewell party?’ radio host Kyle Sandilands asked. ‘All the photographers were there, but I didn’t see you there.’

Kochie then let slip they hadn’t been invited, saying: ‘We didn’t know about it and we had a postponed Christmas party the next day.’

Natalie added: ‘And we had been having champagne in the office for a while.’

The pair also strongly denied rumours Sam had been forced to leave Channel Seven’s top-rating breakfast show.

Kochie insisted Sam hadn’t been pushed out, saying she ‘just wanted a change of life’ after marrying Bowral businessman Richard Lavender.

‘No, no, Sam just wanted a change of life, she got married,’ he said.

Natalie and Kochie weren’t the only Sunrise stars absent from Sam’s send-off, as newsreader Edwina Bartholomew and weatherman Sam Mac also didn’t attend.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported on March 8 that Sam and Kochie’s professional relationship had hit an ‘all-time low’ in the months before her resignation.

Network sources claimed they barely spoke off camera, and the dynamic between them had become ‘untenable’ by early 2021.

Sam’s farewell dinner came just hours after she used her last day on Sunrise to attack the media for treating her ‘unfairly’ during her eight-year tenure.

‘I do want to say that I never fully understood some of the scrutiny and the snarkiness and the bullying from some aspects of the media,’ she said.

‘But today we move on from that, because there is a new chapter starting and it has been overwhelmingly a good experience in my life.’

Sam had announced her resignation on air on March 8.

Weeks earlier, she’d told the News Corp-owned Stellar magazine the TV industry was filled with ‘sociopaths and narcissists’.

Her remarks greatly upset her colleagues and executives at Seven, and were described by some insiders as tantamount to ‘career suicide’.
