THE residents of Coronation Street have their fair share of dramas – and not all of them have been on screen.

This week former Corrie star Vicky Entwhistle revealed plans to write a tell-all book about the soap’s secrets, after becoming disillusioned with the acting industry.

The actress, known for her role as loudmouth Janice Battersby, quit Corrie in 2010 after a series of rows with producers and, earlier this week, claimed she was giving up acting altogether because of the “lack of respect” in auditions.

She tweeted: “Thinking of writing my memoirs” before reaching out to former co-stars Denise Welch and Gaynor Faye for help, adding: “Any moments I’ve missed will be much appreciated.”

The news could have Corrie bosses quaking in their boots, as they’ve survived numerous scandals over the past few years.

From sackings over sex charges and a “rape rap” to false abuse allegations, we reveal the real-life dramas that have rocked the cobbles.

Bill Roache – historic abuse claims

Veteran star Bill Roache has played the much-loved Ken Barlow since the first episode aired in December 1960.

But in 2013, he was devastated when he was accused of assaulting five women between 1965 and 1971 who were aged 16 or under at the time.

The actor, now 90, was acquitted of the charges in February 2014, but the trial took its toll on him.

Outside Preston Crown Court, he gave a statement: “In these situations there are no winners… we should be much kinder to ourselves.”

In his 2018 memoir, Life and Soul, Bill revealed he was arrested in a dawn raid and said as the charges were read, “the colour seemed to drain from everything and there was a sort of mist around us”.

But he insists he has no anger over the false allegations – which saw him suspended from the soap for five months.

“I don’t feel any resentment. We have to be forgiving, because forgiving releases us,” he wrote.

Michael Le Vell – child abuse claims

Michael Le Vell, who plays Kevin, was cleared of child abuse claims

Like Bill, Michael Le Vell also found himself at the centre of child abuse claims in 2011.

The star, who plays mechanic Kevin Webster, was facing 12 sex abuse charges, including rape of a child.

Michael took leave from the soap during the trial, with ITV announcing he would not be appearing “pending the outcome of legal proceedings”.

He was found not guilty by a jury two years later. After the verdict he told reporters that it was a “big weight off everyone’s shoulders”.

During the trial, Michael revealed that he had struggled with alcoholism, and told ITV bosses he had used cocaine twice, in 2013, while struggling to deal with the court case.

He returned to the soap after a short break but was left facing bankruptcy after spending £200,000 on legal fees.

Chris Fountain – rape rap

The star appeared in a mask in the vile video

Hollyoaks pin-up Chris joined the cast in 2011, playing Tommy Duckworth, the son of Terry and Lisa Duckworth.

But two years later he was fired after a bizarre video emerged of him rapping about rape, stabbing people in the face with syringes and bombing houses.

Dressed in a terrifying Halloween mask, the soap star turned the air blue as he rapped that he would “f*** anybody up in the worst way, rape a b***h on her birthday”.

The actor later said he was “really ashamed” of the vile video and in a recent podcast, Mancs on the Mic, he said he had been in “some very dark, horrible places, to the point where I realised I needed to start changing the way that I was thinking – otherwise I might not have been here”.

The 34-year-old, who said he was left with depression and social anxiety, said: “My life, my job, my image, my reputation – everything was just ripped away. Within 24 hours. I didn’t leave my house for four days.”

Katie Redford – lied to bag role

When bosses cast the role of Bethany Platt, Sarah’s troublesome 14-year-old daughter, in 2015, they plumped for actress Katie Redford.

But they were in for a shock when they discovered Katie had lied when she told them she was 19 – and was actually 25.

She was sacked for the fib and replaced with Lucy Fallon, then 19.

Kym Marsh – sex tape saga

Oliver Mellor says he had a five month affair with his married co-star[/caption]

Kym Marsh was left reeling in 2016 after it emerged that an explicit video of her performing a sex act could be exposed.

The Sun on Sunday was offered a sex tape of the Corrie actress with another man for £30,000 but declined. They were also shown pictures of the actress naked and in revealing poses.

The 46-year-old later told OK! Magazine that she felt “sick” after finding out about the attempted sale and said it was “devastating” for her family.

She added: “It’s been one of the worst weeks of my life and I won’t rest until the person is caught.”

The actress was also embroiled in a cheating scandal after reports of a five month affair with cobbles co-star Oliver Mellor, who played Dr Mark Carter.

The alleged fling came just months after her wedding to second husband Jamie Lomas in 2012.

“We loved each other and we weren’t afraid to say it. It wasn’t something we intended to happen, but we couldn’t stop our feelings,” Oliver told the Mirror in 2014.

Kym ended the fling after five months and split with husband Jamie in 2014.

Tina O’Brien and Ryan Thomas – toxic split

Soap’s golden couple ended with an acrimonious split[/caption]

Ryan Thomas and Tina O’Brien were soap’s golden couple during their six year romance and share daughter Scarlett, now 13.

But things turned sour when the pair, who play Jason Grimshaw and Sarah Platt, split in 2009, a month before their daughter’s first birthday.

Tina told new! magazine: “He said he didn’t love me any more. He said I didn’t do it for him any more. Those were his words.

“I was absolutely devastated. He said he didn’t want the responsibility of a relationship with me.”

Tina also claimed Ryan had persuaded her not to return to the cobbles, and suggested he “didn’t want the hassle” of working with her after he dumped her.

She rejoined the soap in 2015, after a six year break, and Ryan left the following year, heading Down Under for a surprise stint in Neighbours.

Despite amicable periods in the split, tempers boiled over in March when Ryan accused his ex of vandalising his Range Rover in a late night spat.

The 38-year-old reportedly smashed Ryan’s Range Rover wing mirror with a baseball bat after the pair became embroiled in a furious row at 1am in London, causing £1,000 of damage.

Speaking to The Sun on Sunday, a source close to Ryan claimed the alleged incident “seems to have snapped the fragile thread their relationship was hanging by”.

Ryan is now with TOWIE star Lucy Mecklenburgh and they share son Roman, two, and are expecting a second child. Tina is married to Adam Croft, with whom she shares son Beau, seven.

Bruno Langley – sexual assault shame

The star was sacked over the nightclub groping[/caption]

In October 2017, Bruno Langley was sacked following accusations of sexual assault at a Manchester nightclub.

The star pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting two women in the club on a night out with Corrie co-stars.

Langley apparently wept in the dock as he was sentenced to a curfew and signing the sex offenders’ register for five years.

The actor blamed the stresses of his job, as his lawyer told the court: “Something happened that night, most possibly in relation to the character he was playing.”

He later gave a tearful apology, confessing “my behaviour was shocking”.

“I have no excuse, no one forced me to drink to such an extreme, but it is hard to explain why I would do anything as dreadful as that,” he told the Sunday Mirror.

“It must have been awful for those women, and I am ashamed of myself. I’m truly sorry. I sincerely apologise… I promise I will never do anything like that again.”

Marc Anwar – Race row

The Pakistan-born actor – who first appeared on the cobbles as businessman Sharif Nazir in 2014 – was removed from the show with immediate effect following a scathing racist rant online in 2016.

In a series of Twitter messages, he described Indians as “p**s-drinking c***s”.

His remarks came days after 17 soldiers were killed at an army base in Kashmir and sparked a UN clash between India and Pakistan.

He tweeted: “Why the f***k do #pakistaniartists want work in #f*** face #india, do you love money so much.”

Next, tweeting an image of a clenched fist, he added: “Ban #India movies in #PakistanisLeaveIndia. B*****ds p**s drinking #c**ts.

He later removed his Twitter account and was condemned by charities for “adding fuel to a fire”.

Simon Gregson – Drunken antics

Simon Gregson was thrown out of the club after stripping of his shirt and swearing at bouncers[/caption]

Fan favourite Simon – who plays joker Steve McDonald – found himself in hot water at a co-star’s leaving do, after dancing topless on the tables and screaming “f*** you” at a bouncer.

The actor was kicked out of the venue in April after partying hard at the farewell bash for Alexandra Mardell, who played his on-screen daughter Emma.

“He was the life and soul of the party but took it a bit far and it annoyed the bar staff and bouncers in the end,”  a witness told The Sun.

Another added: “Simon was acting pretty wildly — but more in the sense that he was in high spirits and getting carried away.”

A few days later the 47-year-old was quizzed by police over a drunken brawl near Aintree after a day at the races, and ITV bosses gave him a “stark warning” about his behaviour.

“Bosses have told Simon his recent behaviour is not ok and it’s not a good look for the soap,” a source told The Sun.

“They’ve warned him to clean up his act. Simon apologised and told them he’d be on his best behaviour from now on.”
