The AutoMall will allow customers to have their car serviced by mechanics, similar to existing car wash options, and you will be able to reserve car spots in two hour bookings.

The 2400 square metre new car sales showroom on the third level will also feature a children’s playground and cafe, and customers will be able to test drive vehicles.

‘We know from our research that customers are seeking a broader offer beyond the traditional retail mix when visiting their local shopping centre,’ said Marco Ettorre from AMP Capital.

He said the centre had around 10.5million visitors a year and the AutoMall was planned to open around December this year.

Figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics showed 9.1 per cent of retails sales were made online in December 2020, compared to only 2.5 per cent in December 2019.

This ‘Australian first’ is just the beginning, the shopping centre operator said as AMP Capital tries to adapt to consumers who are spending less on retail, instead opting to save, splash cash on other services or shop online.

‘This partnership is a coming together of the future of car sales and the future of retail,’ Mr Ettorre said.

The automotive sector has also been struggling, with a 13.7 per cent decline in new car sales from 2019 to 2020.
