Andy Murray suffered disappointment in his first ATP Tour final since 2019 after he was defeated 6-3 6-3 by an impressive Aslan Karatsev in the Sydney Classic. In front of a passionate crowd who were clearly behind the Scot, Murray was unable to find his very best form as he was soundly beaten by Karatsev.
Speaking afterwards, a visibly emotional Murray said: “Firstly, I’d like to congratulate Aslan, fantastic week. I know he also arrived late in Australia as he was recovering from Covid-19 so even more impressive to come back straight away and play at that level. Good job and all the best for the Aussie Open.
“I’d like to thank my team for all of their help this week. First time back in the finals for three years, it’s been a long road to get back here but I couldn’t have done it without your help so thank you.
“I’d also like to thank my family back home, I don’t know if you were watching but a miss you all.”
